When your Holiday Does Not Feel Jolly
When your Holiday Does Not Feel Jolly
Coping with loneliness during the festive season
Often when we look at Hollywood versions of holiday time, we see a picture of happiness, warmth, and lots of quality time with friend and family.
However, for many this is not the reality. In fact, for many people the holiday time can be very lonely.

Here are some suggestions as to how to make your holidays a peaceful and meaningful time:
MAKE AN EFFORT TO GO OUT.
Even if you don’t feel like it, do accept any invitations you get to go out. Any change of scenery, can help improve your mood.
Look if there are events at your local church or other community organisations that you could attend.
Once you are at an event, set yourself a goal: speak to three people you don’t know. Remember, most people are as nervous as you to meet new friends.
If you have had some kind of falling out with your family or friends, use this time of the year, to reach out and resolve the conflict. Reconnect and resolve your differences. Everybody needs support from those around you.
VOLUNTEER AND HELP OTHERS
One of the best ways to feel better in yourself is to help others. It will also help you realise how much you have in your life to be grateful for.
During the holiday period, there are many charities that are looking to spread some festive cheer – and they need volunteers to help them. Look for these opportunities and offer your services. This will give you confidence that you really can make a difference to other people’s lives.
GIVE A GIFT
Also what about giving gifts or cards to the people that have helped you through the year – especially those whose work is often not recognised. People love to be acknowledged and you will also have your heart gladdened in seeing their joy.
KEEP YOURSELF BUSY
Choose a skill or hobby you have always wanted to pursue. Even if there are no classes running, there are many books and videos on the internet that you can watch to teach you.
Look at home if there are projects you have wanted to do and never had a chance to do during the year; now is the perfect time!
BE GRATEFUL
We can get so depressed about what has gone wrong in our lives, they we can forgot just how much has gone right. Sit down and make a list of all the blessings and joy you have had this year; you will soon see that life might have its downs, but the upside is also there.
If you are concerned however, that your feelings of loneliness are extreme, consider whether you might be suffering from depression or another mental health problem.
